2004 Shiraz, Seidelberg Estate
Back in the 1690s, Dutch settlers in Paarl valiantly attempted to grow oaks for wine barrels. The trees shot up in the tropical heat, creating uselessly porous wood. These arboreal giants cover the lawns of colonial property 'Der Leuwen Jagt' - 'The Lion Hunt' -enhancing a vista of the Simonsberg. The place now takes its name from German émigré owner Roland Seidel, who sensibly hired winemaker Cerina de Jongh, top of her year at Elsenberg College, ex-of Grangehurst and veteran of vintages around the world. Better-versed in oak than her predecessors, she produces beautifully-structured reds like this pepper, clove and blackberry-scented Shiraz. Superior 'braai' fare.

2006 Unwooded Chardonnay, Seidelberg Estate
Seidelberg, established in 1680 on the southern slopes of the Paarlberg mountain, was originally known as 'De Leuwen Jagt' ('the lion hunt') but in these conservationist times the current owner, German émigré Roland Seidel thought it sensible to re-christen the place. The estate's rust-hued soils produce rich, rumbustious reds; there's uncommon restraint here in this fine, pure, uncluttered and unwooded Chardonnay, with its ripe, melony fruit and fresh citrus twist. Great with quiche.
